Water is Life…
Across the African continent, the availability of drinking water is scarce, affecting the quality of life, safety, food, health and education of billions of human beings.
Women are most affected by this crisis. More than half of the 1.2 billion people who have no access to water are women and girls. It is estimated that women and girls spend more than 8 hours each day traveling up to 15 km to transport between 15 to 20 liters of water each trip. That’s up to 60% of their day carrying heavy buckets of water on their heads.

Empower Women – Empower a Nation…

The African Reflections Foundation(ARF) has launched a new initiative to empower women in rural Tanzania in communities where water wells are being built.
The Bucket Kit is a self-sustaining drip irrigation system ideal for communities suffering from water shortages. The irrigation system works using gravity, allowing the water to drip into the soil which provides enough moisture for a 6-row vegetable garden to feed a family and give them the opportunity to generate an income.

Children are the Future

Over 70% of students in Africa do not have school desks to work on in schools. The affect this has on the psychology of the students in manifold and African Reflections Foundation is there to help.
Among the appeal for donations, monetary or in-kind, African Reflections Foundation is raising funds to supply classrooms with adequate school desks. This will employ local carpenters as well as provide the resources necessary for the students to study in their classrooms. Currently, a three-seat desk is used by up to five (5) students in many schools. |

Africa Education Initiative |

Thursday, 06 July 2006 |
The African Reflections Foundation puts "Education" of the people of Africa as one of the highest priorities. Only through education will the people be able to rise above the current levels of poverty and poor living conditions.
Throughout Africa school children are forced to sit on bare floors because classrooms are not equipped with even basic furnishings. A greater misfortune is that some children are only able to attend classes in primotive school buildings (as seen in the image above) with hard-packed earth floors, as there are an inadequate number of classrooms.

Educate to Alleviate

Mkokozi Primary School is located at Mkuranga District and was built in 1974. Over the years there have been little advancement to meet the requirements.
Although the school employs 27 teachers, there is limited space for teachers to work thus forcing teachers to create make-shift offices outside.

Education is the Answer

African Reflections Foundation (ARF) found that a high percentage of school children go to school hungry every morning. Thousands of families live on less than one dollar per day, thus the children are lucky to have just one meal a day.
African Reflections Foundation, with the help of generous donors, has started to feed the children breakfast at Mkokozi Primary School, in the outskirts of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. We hope that the children, who do exceptionally well under harsh learning conditions, will be able to concentrate better and learn more after having breakfast.

Helping them learn how to help themselves

Groups of rural women hailing from Zanzibar Island have been farming seaweed for many years. They receive less than 50 US cents a day. Some women have been farming the seaweed for the last 12 years.
The women are often exploited by merchants and traders from overseas and are unaware of their condition and plight. |

Empowerment is Limitless

The ancient Masaai tribe are well known for their traditional medicines including roots and bark from trees. However, due to drought and therefore the loss of herds and pastureland, many Masaai have moved to the urban centers. It is common to see Masaai Women sitting on roadsides with a small table where they display their medicines and crafts, trying to earn a living.
African Reflections Foundation(ARF) initiated a group of Masaai women (Ushanga Crafts Women) to create high quality beaded necklaces by making the funds available for the crafters to work regularly for African Reflections Foundation.
The women produce many beautiful products including bracelets, anklets, and authentic Masaai sets worn around the necks of Masaai women. |

Help them help themselves

African Reflections Foundation(ARF) assists African craftsmen and women who would otherwise be unemployed. By providing fair payment for products, along with consistent purchases and advances, the artists are able to afford education, health care, food and housing for themselves and their families.
The craftsmen are trained in quality control among other things to insure their items will appeal to the International Market.
With funds raised through the African Reflections Store, African Reflections Foundation initiates development programs and projects in impoverished rural communities across Africa. |
