Mkokozi Primary School is located at Mkuranga District and was built in 1974. Over the years there have been little advancement to meet the requirements. Although the school employs 27 teachers, there is limited space for teachers to work thus forcing teachers to create make-shift offices outside.

Although the school employs 27 teachers, there is limited space for teachers to work thus forcing teachers to create make-shift offices outside.

There are 628 pupils with a 50/50 split between boys and girls. Classes are divided into two sets (morning and afternoon) to accommodate for the over population. Many other local children would like to attend the school however families are unable to afford the costs for a uniform for the children. The school has classes for children as young as five (5) years old and most graduates are fifteen (15) – sixteen (16) years old. However, older children who want to attend school are welcomed – one student graduating this year is 19 years old!

The infrastructure of the school is dilapidated and much of the infrastructure built in 1974 is still remain; including the weakening wood poles holding together a mud foundation.

ImageThe mud classrooms are located outside on a dirt floor. When it rains, the water seeps through the roof onto the students as well as turning the floor into a mud puddle – Yet classes always continue.

The older student study in the mud classrooms because they are more capable to escape should the structure collapse which is a legitimate threat throughout the year. Nonetheless, in 2006 forty-seven (47) of these students were selected to join secondary school by passing their national exams out of fifty-eight (58) who wrote the exam! This is an exceptionally high percentage in the region especially considering the circumstances! African Reflections has made an initial contribution and is campaigning to raise funds to help build this school. There are many shortages including supplies and infrastructure. The school has no library and is in need of 12 classrooms to accommodate the 600+ students.

Most of the student travel long distances, sometime up to 12 miles (6 KM), to come to school. They leave their homes just after sunrise with no food to eat, and no water to drink. To combat the water shortage in the area, specifically in the school grounds, African Reflections Foundation is building a fresh-water well. This will give children clean water to drink at school at all times.
