ARF News - Local Businessman Shares Knowledge, Offers Support |
|
The villagers in the Mkuranga district were introduced to a local businessman who runs a commercial farm in the area. He spent the day with the villagers discussing their concerns, showing gardening and irrigation techniques and offering solutions to some of the problems they were experiencing with their new crops.
The rotating of crops, cultivating the soil for best drainage, shaping the soil for the best use of water and choosing economical crops were among the topics covered that day.
Mr. Bharmal also observed the progress of well construction during his visit. The village leaders invited him back to visit the villages, stating he would be most welcome whenever he could find the time.
With the bucket irrigation kits maintaining a slow, steady source of water to the gardens, the growth is exceptional. Mr. Bharmal introduced the idea of crop allocation, for example: two rows for consumption, three rows for selling, thereby making the garden create a self supporting system paying for any supplies and seeds etc.
